Spending the Summer holidays together with our pets is possible, but it is important to be aware of the problems our pets can face when we are leaving. They have indeed to deal with a new situation, different from the usual one. For this reason, the owner has to find the best way to calm them down in order to save them from stress. Spending hours in a crate, being carsick and ending up in a completely new setting is not so easy for our pets. If our pet is particularly nervous, you should consult the vet and ask for a mild tranquilizer or specific medicines to relieve the symptoms of a possible disease. There are also some effective stratagems: providing your cat or dog a piece of clothing and placing one of its favourite toys or a blanket inside its own carrier, will provide reassuring olfactory references for the pet.
TRAVELLING BY PLANE
Almost all airline companies allow pet transport. When booking a flight with your cat or dog, you have to check whether stopovers with airline or plane changes are scheduled. Transfers from an aeroplane to another one can carry risks (such as crate breaking and the loss of the pet) and the possibilty for the pet to be stopped for health checks or even for the quarantine. In this case, you have to ask preventively about the health obligations of the final destination and transfer country, too. Guide dogs for the blind are allowed to travel with their owners as long as they are provided with leash and muzzle, except restrictions stated in the chosen airline company's regulations. Concerning the acceptance on board of cats and dogs, there is not a sole regulation for all airlines. The type of carring case to be used for pet transport or the number of accepted pets in the cabin varies depending on the carrier. Small sized dogs (weighing less than 10 kilos) and cats are usually admitted in the plane cabin. While some airlines accept the traditional carrier, others require particular kinds of carriers. Large sized and medium-sized dogs, on the other hand, travel in the pressure hold. Canaries and other small pets travel in cages in the cabin. Some airline companies provide special assistance of trained staff, crisis and refreshment centres for pets during stopovers. If your pet travels in the cabin, make sure it causes no inconvenience to other passengers in order to avoid unpleasant arguments. Do not forget, especially if it is a long journey, to provide your pet with food and water. If your pet travels in the hold, it is advisable for you to buy a suitable crate where to put him for a few hours in the days before your departure. By doing so, your pet will get used to it. In case of a stop over, not only is it possible but also recommended to go visit your pet and comfort it with water, food and affection.
