Having a walk with your four-legged friend is certainly pleasant, especially when you are on holiday. It is always necessary, however, to make sure your dog's safety and the safety of others is not endangered. The Order of the Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs of 3rd March 2009, requires dogs to be walked on a leash in urban areas or places open to the public, and compels owners to carry a muzzle when public safety is at risk, or upon request of the competent authorities, as well as while boarding means of public transport. It is a risk to release one's pet: it endangers his/her own life, as well as the life of others. If he/she crosses the road, he/she may unwillingly cause an accident and be killed at the same time. According to the Code of Civil Law (Article 2052 and 2043), animal owners are responsible for any damage caused by the animal and are compelled to compensate for the damage, not only on the road, but also at the bar, restaurant, hotel, etc. There are various insurance companies that offer policies for damage caused by animals to third parties. At the same time, if your animal dies because of an accident and not for your fault, you can entitled to ask for compensation. IN BARS, RESTAURANTS OR HOTELS There is no national regulation preventing domestic animals from entering bars, restaurants, pizza parlours, hotels, country resorts, etc. Therefore, the local sanitary agencies can issue no prohibition in this respect. The only one entitled to decide whether your cat or dog is allowed to enter certain premises is the owner of those premises. This is the assumption the "I'm finally allowed in!" campaign stems from, addressed to all Italian business owners, to open their doors to our four-legged friends. ON THE BEACH The local authorities are entitled to decide regarding the presence of animals on the beach. Normally animals are not admitted on public beaches or private resorts, unless specified otherwise. It is therefore appropriate, before travelling, to contact the municipality where you are planning to spend your holidays, to check if there are any beaches where it is possible for your pet to enter. Many of these beaches are of course listed in this website. In any case, we suggest you bring along the scoop for the waste produced by your animal. ON THE ROAD When the journey by car is long, it is best to stop every now and then. A few short but frequent stops are a panacea for our four-legged friends: they can stretch their legs, eat and drink at will. There are not many service areas that provide places for our friends yet, but things are changing in these years. |
